The purpose of the Rural Psychiatry Project is to engage psychiatric trainees into completing training posts in rural/remote areas.


The project will focus on:

• Identifying the barriers and enablers to psychiatric trainees taking training positions in rural areas
• Identifying the educational and structural requirements for psychiatric trainees in rural areas
• Making recommendations to address these barriers to psychiatric trainees taking training positions in rural areas
• Developing resources based on enablers to rural practice to encourage psychiatric trainees to participate in STP in rural areas

It is hoped that this work will subsequently:

• Encourage trainee interest and participation in rural training
• Maximise and/or increase support structures for trainees and supervisors working in rural/regional areas
• Retain trainees in rural/regional areas
